Movement Research - The 4 Concept Pools
Here are the 4 movement research concept pools from which I derive most, if not all, of the improvisational tasks we explore in the movement classes.
1. the 3d canvas
-illustrating movement with limbs and joints, composing using circular shapes and figures of 8
2. the vortex dance
-falling out of balance, giving in to gravitational forces and spirals to move down to the floor -and back up
3. nature & its metaphors
-gentle waves, falling leaves, work on naturalistic images and qualities, imagination & movement landscapes
4. the unnatural
-controlling and isolating single joints and limbs, limiting movement possibilities and choices, exploring the counter intuitive
As a movement coach with a background in acrobatics, and with an ongoing focus on slowing down movement to find more sustainable and soft variations and executions of moves, my style has naturally developed in a direction often associated with contemporary dance and contemporary floorwork.
While I’m not aiming to, nor claiming to, represent a contemporary dancer, I want to emphasize how deeply inspired I am by my friends and colleagues who have pursued a formal education in contemporary dance—an experience that, in my eyes, allows people to access unmatched sensitivity and depth when it comes to a more open or improvisational way of moving.
Therefore, big thanks to my friends and colleagues for portraying and helping me visualize my movement research concepts in this clip.
